High Aspect Ratio Tomography (Bruker HART PLUS)

New micro-CT technique for high aspect ratio tomography, to give you better quality scans of planar objects and samples with a high aspect ratio. Bruker HART PLUS is a new feature of Bruker SkyScan micro-computed tomography systems.

Blue Scientific is the official Nordic distributor for Bruker SkyScan Micro-CT in the UK and Nordic region (Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Iceland). For more information or quotes, please get in touch.

Rotation Steps and Image Quality

For the best results and image quality, it’s important to select the optimum rotation step for your micro-CT scan. Bruker’s method note 122 (available through Bruker’s support website) explains how to choose a correct rotation step.

However, for samples with a high aspect ratio, it can be difficult to choose a step that suits the whole sample. As the step is fixed, it will be optimised for either the short or the long sample side. This results in very long scan times, or inferior resolution and image quality that isn’t as good as it could be.

Bruker HART PLUS

Bruker’s HART PLUS (High Aspect Ratio Tomography PLUS) is a new feature that continually adjusts the step for you, to ensure the best scan conditions at every rotation angle. Planar objects can be scanned 3 – 4 times faster than with a standard scan technique, at the same resolution.

A detailed description of HART PLUS and how it works can be found in Bruker’s Method Note 123 (available through Bruker’s support website).

Example: Ceramic Capacitor

In the example below, a ceramic capacitor was imaged using a standard technique with a short 13 minute and a longer 45 minute scan, then with HART PLUS for 13 minutes. Here are the reconstructed cross-sections for comparison:
