About Thermo Fisher Scientific

Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc. is a world leader in scientific instruments. Their mission is to enable people to make the world healthier, cleaner and safer, with a global team of more than 75,000 colleagues delivering innovative technologies.

Since the introduction of electron microscopes in the 1930s, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) has been established as a key tool in numerous fields, providing microscopic information about the surface and near-surface region. Thermo Scientific’s floor model SEMs such as the Axia ChemiSEM provide the flexibility and versatility to meet a wide range of industrial needs, for large and heavy samples, with a wide range of accessories and high quality imaging for challenging materials and the smallest details.

We’re proud to be their distributor for the new Axia ChemiSEM in the UK and Ireland.

Axia ChemiSEM

The Axia ChemiSEM is a SEM EDS instrument that’s flexible, easy to use, and offers instantaneous, quantitative elemental analysis. It was launched in November 2020.

Making SEM Accessible

Scanning electron microscopy is sometimes seen as a complicated technique. Sample preparation, alignments, cost of ownership, and difficulties with analytical techniques can be off-putting.

Thermo Scientific set out to resolve this and create a more accessible SEM without compromising flexibility. They aimed to make microscopy an easy and enjoyable experience, so you can focus on your data and experiments, rather than struggling with the instrument.

The result is the Thermo Scientific Axia ChemiSEM Scanning Electron Microscope. It makes it easier and more convenient to acquire SEM-EDS data. EDS analysis is always on – giving you chemical data and imaging together as one.

The Axia ChemiSEM is a single platform that has always-on EDS data. It will expand materials analysis access by extending micro-imaging and micro-analysis to a broad range of non-technical users. This new microscope is ideal for both high-volume industrial labs that want to increase sample throughput while reducing costs and academic institutions that want affordable, reliable and fast SEM-EDS analysis with less training.”

SEM and EDS

Unlike traditional SEMs, the Axia ChemiSEM collects EDS data continuously in the background. Using unique algorithms, SEM and EDS signals are processed simultaneously. This enables you to view the morphology and quantitative elemental composition of a sample together, in real time.

EDS data is processed constantly in the background, with live updates on elemental data as it’s acquired. Elements on your sample can be toggled on and off, and you can isolate areas of interest.

Automation for Convenience

Automated features make the Axia ChemiSEM easier to use, such as auto-alignment, automatic focussing and live quantitative EDS mapping. Always-on processing makes analysis twice as fast as traditional methods.

The Axia ChemiSEM Scanning Electron Microscope is designed to bring SEM/EDS analysis to a wider scientific audience, speed up your workflow, and save time on training. This enables you to focus on data collection rather than instrument management.

Instantaneous elemental information reveals chemical variability within grains over a large thin section. This can then be used to identify areas of interest for further analysis.

Applications

  • Process control
  • Quality control
  • Failure analysis and defect discovery
  • Materials research

Investigate samples of all shapes and sizes. The large chamber can accommodate samples that might usually be considered too heavy for electron microscopy, up to 10kg.

Techniques

  • Colour SEM – Visualise elemental data for new insights. It’s continuously on, so you don’t need to switch between techniques.
  • In situ high temperature imaging – Study materials in real-world conditions, and observe their behaviour as they melt, deform, recrystalise and react to heat.
  • Particle analysis – Characterise powders and particles.
  • Cathodoluminescence (CL) – Collect information about composition, crystal defects and photonic properties.
